Astronaut Reveals Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Harassment Post-Spaceflight

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also carried high-profile passengers.

The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, referring to a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.

She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has focused her career on women's health research and conducted tests during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her background – was buried under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following reaching space, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the supporters whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.

She added that despite the negativity, important benefits had resulted from the experience, including spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

About the Mission

The self-operating New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of space.

The diverse crew also comprised accomplished professionals from various fields.

The company behind the mission is a private space firm established by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
