Based on figures provided by Israel, at least 98 detainees from Palestine have lost their lives while detained starting from October 2023. A rights monitoring body located in Israel has indicated that the actual number is probably considerably higher, due to numerous of disappeared people in Gaza.

Study Results

An updated study documented fatalities caused by assault, medical neglect, and inadequate nutrition. Investigators employed transparency petitions, medical examiner documents, and testimonies with attorneys, activists, family members, and observers.

Recent Figures

Even with the total number of casualties recorded being significantly higher than other recent estimates, it likely does not reflect the complete extent of Palestinian casualties, according to the director of the prisoners and detainees department.

“Even though we are presenting proof for a larger total of fatalities than earlier indicated, this is not the entire story,” he stated. “We are sure that there are yet individuals who died in confinement that we have not identified.”

Civilian Casualties

Classified government records indicates that the largest portion of Palestinian prisoners from Gaza who died in detention were non-combatants, based on a related inquiry.

In May of 2024, a military intelligence database monitoring all militants in Gaza, a roster of more than 47,000 named individuals, listed just 21 deaths in detention. By that point, 65 Palestinians from Gaza had perished in detention.

Detention Conditions

Assault, mistreatment, and further cruelty of detainees from Palestine has been normalised across Israel’s jail system over the duration of conflict. High-ranking authorities have publicly acknowledged starvation rations and an underground jail holding detainees who never see daylight.

Current and former detainees and whistleblowers from the defense forces have all alleged routine infractions of human rights protocols.

Institutionalized Cruelty

The institutionalised cruelty occurred alongside a disturbing rise in deaths recorded across no fewer than 12 detention centers in Israel. During the previous decade prior to the conflict, there were typically a couple casualties a year.

“This is not just an individual case occasionally. It is systemic and it will continue,” a representative commented, partly due to the fact there is a climate of near total impunity for fatalities and maltreatment of Palestinians.

Only a single instance of assaulting inmates has come to trial, with the military personnel sentenced to half a year. An effort to try others over a vicious assault involving assault caused public rallies and the arrest of Israel’s senior defense attorney, with the suspects now insisting that indictments against them be withdrawn.

Lack of Accountability

“In spite of this significant total of casualties, during 24 months not a single person has faced arrest,” the spokesperson said. “There exist no charges over any death.

“During the time these practices remain in effect, all Palestinian detainees in custody is in danger, also the healthy ones, also the juveniles who have no medical issues.”

High-Profile Cases

Several casualties in detention have been publicly known, for instance a 50-year-old hospital director who lost his life in prison after a third of a year in confinement.

An inmate held with the victim stated that he was led to the yard by guards immediately preceding his death, clearly wounded and unclothed from the hips downward. His body remains unreleased to Gaza.

Other prisoners who lost their lives in Israeli custody remain anonymous. The prison service and armed services supplied researchers with the number of deaths in custody, and minimal other details such as the site where they perished, but excluding the detainees’ identities.

Recognition Difficulties

In 21 cases, mostly people from Gaza, investigators were not able to match the limited information given by officials to a casualty recorded by advocacy bodies, by means of testimony from former inmates or accounts in the press.

The detainees’ families could be unaware about their loved ones’ deaths either, as Israel has impeded efforts to locate Palestinians it is detaining. During 210 days at the beginning of the war, the defense forces refused to supply fundamental details about the condition of many of individuals confined in Gaza, in effect implementing a policy of forced disappearance, according to the advocacy organization.
