A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's major public works projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term ended the year before. This project was closely associated with his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised persistent apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an immediate halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in full accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these national undertakings.
