Similar to bad weather swept through the north-west the prior day, Manchester City overwhelmed United aside at the their home ground. It was a statement three goal victory for Andrée Jeglertz’s side due to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a performance that truly announced their championship potential as they reinforced their position at the WSL pinnacle.

Back-to-Back Defeats for Manchester United

This result signalled back-to-back league losses for Skinner's side for the first time since May 2024, placing them a sizable gap off the table toppers with their championship aspirations in serious doubt.

The Red Devils' capability to juggle league and continental soccer with a limited roster has been a frequently analyzed topic since they earned a place in the UCL. Considering the schedule, it always appeared this was the matchday that would seriously challenge this capability. Regrettably for the visitors, they appeared fatigued from start to finish, the historic win against the French side clearly having had an impact.

Team Changes

Commanding Opening Period

The hosts, meanwhile, could have added to their lead when a delightful Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it was insignificant to the winning team. After failing to defeat any side who ended above them last season, Jeglertz’s side now have wins against Arsenal and Manchester United to position them in a strong position after the opening fixtures.
