Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing these drugs should be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Experts propose the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

People who have discontinued the jabs report a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become starving," said an individual.

This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Use

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success relies on combined behavioural changes.
