The Generosity of People We Don't Know: How a Person I Barely Knew Helped Me Obtain the Position That Transformed My Existence

In the late 1980s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to Europe with a friend. Because my friend was exploring enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had booked a 14-day stopover there before heading to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a big 10-storey building on the UWS called International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the dining hall, where we got some food, took a seat, and began chatting with other diners.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at a prestigious New York university. He asked me what I did, and I shared that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been conducting research using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an microscopy facility at the institution – adjacent to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I consider applying for a job with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

A day later I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that after dark. The Iraqi student approached me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but right away explained to my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where everything seems achievable – she said: “That can be arranged. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for a trio of years. A perk of the job was that I also received free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

I lost touch with him and I don’t even know his name, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in so many ways. I lacked the bravery or self-belief to reach out at an prestigious college and seek a position. Moreover, I had always wanted to study abroad, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that gig at Columbia led me to a position in Switzerland where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising a family of four kids. That encounter altered everything. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
