On the eve of his half-decade plus one year in charge, Mikel Arteta has stated plainly that his longevity in North London is directly connected to achieving success.

A Look Back: The Arteta Era

The Spanish coach took over on December 20th, 2019 and promptly led the team to an FA Cup triumph a short time later. Yet, that early success remains his lone significant piece of silverware following the departure of Unai Emery.

“Absolutely,” Arteta responded when questioned about his future past 2027. “However, it is about today. And a lot of things need to fall into place in the next few months as well to deserve that opportunity.”

This weekend sees the six-year milestone with a fixture against Everton, the very same club Arsenal met just after his role was made public.

League Position and Pressure

As second-placed Manchester City taking on West Ham earlier in the day, Arsenal risk losing the summit in the Premier League for the first time. This comes despite Arteta presiding over a squad that has been plagued by more than a century of fitness issues from the beginning of last season.

He is under a contract with a year and a half left on the deal he signed in 2024, yet understands fully that he must deliver in the immediate future.

Survival in the Job

He went on to explain, stressing the daily requirement to validate his position. “My belief is that a manager needs to warrant the right to be here tomorrow. And that is determined by how you react, how you address the media, how you go into the dressing room, the instructions you give.”

Arteta continued, expressing gratitude for the consistent faith from the board and owners, but pinpointing the squad's dedication as most crucial. “Ultimately, the critical component are those players... Over this half-decade, I’ve seen just players with a level of attention, hunger for knowledge and give the maximum to the team.”

Injury Concerns

The squad approaches the upcoming game coping with an additional absence. Defender Ben White has been sidelined with a strain that is anticipated to sideline him for the coming weeks.

Confidence in the Path

Even with the injury crisis and the intense pressure, Arteta is confident the club's “focus and dialogue” are completely changed from when he first arrived.

He pointed to the team's performances as proof they are close. “You look at the performances, all the records that we... were breaking... We still have yet to do that [win trophies]. But that shows the level we are at.”

Arteta concluded, “It represents a quality that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And our aim is to achieve even higher goals. And if we do that, I think we are on the right path to winning.”
