The United Kingdom Ready to Employ Frozen Russia's Assets to Finance the Ukrainian Military Campaign
The United Kingdom is set to progress with using the total value of frozen Russia's assets to bolster Ukraine's war effort, Leader Sir Keir Starmer has declared.
In a joint statement, the leaders of the United Kingdom, the French Republic, and Germany emphasized that this coordinated action would heighten pressure on Moscow's head Vladimir Putin and compel Russia to engage in negotiations.
They further noted that the initiative would be carried out in close cooperation with the US.
British penalties have frozen over £25bn of Russian resources since the Russian government launched its comprehensive attack against the Ukrainian nation in 2022. Yet, until now, funds allocated to Ukraine using Russian assets had only been taken from gains and dividends generated on them.
Sir Keir informed Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelensky that the Britain, France, and Germany were aligned in their goal to drive progress toward employing the total worth of the immobilized Russia's state assets to conclude the conflict.
He stated that more restrictions in the coming days and weeks would heighten the tension on the Russian government.
This statement follows EU officials met in Copenhagen previously to discuss using immobilized Russian assets for a 140-billion-euro credit to the Ukrainian nation.
Recently, President Donald Trump urged G7 allies to take or otherwise use immobilized Russia's assets, according to news outlets.
The worth of immobilized Russia's assets in the EU is estimated to be approximately €211bn.
Leader Zelensky urges the United Kingdom's Sir Keir Starmer to join the Purl program
Moscow launched extensive bombardments throughout Ukraine on Friday, leading to blackouts in many areas of the capital city, Kyiv, and several other zones.
Two people were lost their lives and at least 20 people were injured in the strike, Ukrainian officials reported.
In a post on social media after the attack, Zelensky commented that the premeditated assault focused on non-military and power facilities.
"The necessity is not mere statements but concrete steps - from the US, the European Union, and the Group of Seven - in providing anti-aircraft weapons and implementing restrictions," he stated.
"Each restrictive measure weakens Moscow's military apparatus," Zelensky noted, in a different message.
Additionally that day, Zelensky told media outlets he would press Sir Keir to enter the weapons procurement programme, under which Nato countries buy weapons from the United States to give to the Ukrainian forces.
While commending the United Kingdom's firm backing for the Ukrainian government, he said it should indicate firmly that it would engage in the system, as well as impose additional measures on Russia.
