In a major move for their retooling roster, the South Side team have welcomed slugger Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a two-year contract bringing in the accomplished player.
Contract Details and Incentives
The agreement grants a $1 million signing bonus, payable within 30 days, combined with salaries of $16 million for the next season and $17 million for the 2027 year.
Importantly, Murakami's compensation is subject to escalators based on performance achievements in 2026:
- An additional $1M for winning the Most Valuable Player award.
- Half a million dollars for finishing second or third in MVP voting.
- $250,000 for placing between fourth and tenth.
- $250,000 for earning the Rookie of the Year honor.
The agreement provides that he cannot be sent to the minors without his permission and allows him to become a free agent at the conclusion of the contract. Further benefits include a dedicated interpreter and travel costs between Japan and the U.S..
Transfer Payment and Team Legacy
As part of the acquisition, Chicago owes a posting fee of $6,575,000 to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's Central League. The Yakult organization are also entitled to a 15% cut of 15% triggered incentive payments.
Murakami will become the fourth-ever Japanese to suit up for the White Sox, following pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu previously coached Murakami during their time in Japan.
Career Highlights
Murakami, a lefty bat who turns 26 soon, joins a promising lineup in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are finished with a last-place season, placing last in the American League Central but showing a notable improvement from the prior campaign.
A two-time Central League MVP honors in '21 and '22, Murakami is famous for a monumental 2022 season where he belted 56 home runs, eclipsing the all-time record for a Japanese-born player previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the most youthful hitter ever to win Japan's coveted Triple Crown.
His last year was curtailed to 56 games due to an oblique injury. Even with fanning 64 times, he hit .273 with 22 HRs and 47 runs batted in.
Over his eight-season tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has accumulated a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 home runs, 647 runs batted in, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in 892 contests. Early in his career playing mostly at first base, he has spent most of his time to third base.
International Pedigree
Murakami's clutch hitting were on full display during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the semifinal against Mexico, he delivered a victory-sealing two-base hit that scored Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a dramatic 6-5 win. The next night in the championship game against the USA, he hit a game-tying shot in the early innings, paving the way for Japan's 3-2 title triumph.
The new White Sox addition is set to be officially presented at a press conference on Monday.
