Throughout a large portion of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned within a psychic prison forged from the recollections of Henry Creel. Their mission for a way out in episode 6 has them relive a life-altering moment from Henry's early years—an event that may just hold the key to defeating him permanently.

A Journey Into the Cavern

When she finds Max in the mental landscape known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is hiding out in a cave that Henry is terrified of. A clever observation a viewing device taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the true terror lies outside of the cave. Matching her view to the cut-out, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.

In this place, they observe a Henry as a boy come across an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man panics and shoots, hitting him in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. Essentially, yes, but the event went deeper than a defensive killing.

Similar to other plot points of the final season, the full story behind the events in the tunnel is detailed in the stage play the prequel play.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research

This backstory explains the 1943 event, which transported a warship into a dimension known as the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the only one to return was the captain, who returned in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.

That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this experiment in Nevada. One of his scientists took experimental components to sell to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. This spy in the tunnel is the one who stole the materials.

Unlocking the Mystery

Considering what is revealed about his research, the briefcase almost certainly contained samples of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is bleeding from his hand. It's probable he was infected upon opening the case, causing the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would later pass on to the test subjects in Hawkins Lab.

A second theory, the box could have held exotic matter that eventually found its way to the Hawkins lab, where it helps stabilize the mirror dimension. The prequel shows that the boy ended up in the Abyss, reappearing hours later with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he struggles with the control of a dark entity, similar to how the character Will was influenced by the entity in an earlier season.

The Power of Fear

Henry's enduring terror associated with the mine highlights how deeply scarring the incident was for him. While he controls the collective consciousness and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him lingers. Fear is his tool, and the narrative points to a climactic battle between him and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to become stronger.

This journey has effectively disarmed Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, which could provide a critical advantage in the endgame conflict ahead.
