While Beachgoers Ran From Danger, Widely-Shared Picture Depicts Beach Patrol Sprinting ‘Pedal to the Metal’ In the Direction of the Site.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as local of Bondi, has always considered the iconic beach as her back yard. On that fateful weekend night, she, like many others in the area, heard loud noises echoing through the neighbourhood.

“That was the initial assumption, but I thought it was still too bright and no one could see them,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her apartment, she observed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The faces they wore signaled something was wrong.

As she stood on the street, talking to a pair who had hurried up the slope in their swimwear, she noticed someone approaching behind her. This turned out to be a beach patrol officer, sprinting to Bondi barefoot from the adjacent Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while carrying a defibrillator.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I spotted this streak in blue,” she recounts. “He was just flying past. It was just him heading in the opposite way that all the others was trying to get away from, and hauling that large equipment and without footwear … He was sprinting at something that certainly every fibre in your being would signal you to run in the reverse way.

“Just no hesitation, but just fully full throttle sprinting.”

A Symbol of Bravery In the Wake of Crisis

The photo taken by Ching of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as one of many moments of heroism in the following of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, says that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to support the other members at Bondi, as well as to work with emergency personnel, police and medical teams attending to numerous the injured.

Waverley council, the local authority that oversees many professional lifeguards, said that the staff acted heroically from the second the violence began right into late that nighttime.
